École La Vallée is a new K-12 francophone school currently under development in Pemberton, British Columbia. Built to meet the long-term educational needs of the region’s growing French-speaking population, the project will replace temporary classrooms with a permanent facility that reflects both environmental responsibility and cultural identity.
Mercer Mass Timber is supplying over 1,276 m³ of Douglas Fir cross-laminated timber and 350 m³ of certified Douglas Fir glulam for the project’s two-story mass timber structure. Our supply-only role ensures high-quality materials arrive precisely when needed, helping to streamline installation timelines and support prefabricated construction workflows led by BC Passive House.
Biophilic Design & Regional Materials
In line with Passive House principles and biophilic design strategies, the use of exposed mass timber throughout the school is intended to foster a calming, warm, and nature-connected learning environment. Research continues to support the psychological and physiological benefits of biophilic environments – particularly in education settings where student wellbeing and cognitive performance are top of mind.
The use of Douglas Fir, sourced from British Columbia, reinforces a strong sense of place and regional character. This species is not only structurally efficient and visually appealing, but it also represents a sustainable, renewable resource that’s deeply tied to the province’s ecological and economic heritage.
Community Impact
Beyond classroom learning, École La Vallée is envisioned as a community hub. A neighborhood learning center will provide French-language childcare, while flexible event and recreation spaces will help strengthen ties across the francophone community. The school is part of a $66 million investment by the Province of British Columbia and is expected to open its doors in 2027.
