Perched atop Alabama’s highest peak, the new Cheaha State Park Lodge marks a defining moment for sustainable design and regional craftsmanship

Spokane Valley, WA – November 18, 2025Mercer Mass Timber (MMT), a leading manufacturer of sustainable timber building materials and a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., announces its role in the design and fabrication of Alabama’s largest mass timber project—the new Cheaha State Park Lodge in Delta, Alabama. The 26,000-square-foot lodge exemplifies how material innovation can honor place, heritage, and ecology through modern mass timber construction.

The new Cheaha State Park Lodge design reinterprets legacy through a contemporary lens, employing a hybrid structural system of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam, all manufactured by Mercer Mass Timber in Conway, AR using FSC-certified, locally sourced Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) from within Alabama. Known for its high density and stiffness, SYP is well-suited to the elevation and climate demands of the Appalachian foothills.

Designed by Chambless King Architects for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the lodge draws inspiration from the park’s original 1930s-era stone structures, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the New Deal. Throughout, the architecture invites visitors to reconnect with nature through the tactility and warmth of exposed wood, and a biophilic design approach that intersects forest and structure.

“Designing the new lodge at Cheaha has truly been the project of a lifetime,” said Jared Fulton, AIA, principal at Chambless King Architects. “We sought to design the space as an extension of the mountain, cascading the building form to follow the site grades and connect visitors back to nature. The material choices—specifically the inclusion of mass timber—celebrate renewable building materials in their raw, natural state and complement the distinctive features of Cheaha’s New Deal Era Civilian Conservation Corps structures. Beyond enriching the guest experience, we hope the new lodge becomes a meaningful asset to the local community and a lasting tribute to the mountain’s legacy.”

The name Cheaha derives from the Creek word Chaha, meaning “high place,” a fitting appreciation of a site long revered by Indigenous peoples for its elevation and spiritual significance. Mercer Mass Timber and its project partners acknowledge and honor this history, recognizing the enduring connection between the mountain and those who first named it.

“We are proud to support Alabama’s embrace of renewable materials that tell the story of place through design, performance, and respect for the land,” said Ricardo Brites, Director of Engineering & VDC at Mercer Mass Timber. “This four-story project, featuring an extensive amount of exposed mass timber components, is made possible through our strong partnerships. We are thankful to The Westervelt Company, our fiber sourcing partner, and Carpentry Plus, Inc., the mass timber integrator, for their partnership in bringing this signature project to life.”

Set for completion in early 2026, Cheaha State Park Lodge stands as a public commitment to low-carbon construction, regional identity, and the timeless dialogue between nature and craft.

One year after groundbreaking, Phase 1 of construction has been completed on one of the most ambitious civic mass timber projects in the U.S.

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA – May 20, 2025 – Today, Mercer Mass Timber (MMT) announced the completion of the first phase of construction on the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, a future cultural destination located in the heart of the North Dakota Badlands, and the largest mass timber project in the state to date.

Phase one construction began one year ago and is centered on the museum building and its dramatic roof structure of sweeping curves and complex geometry. The roof, designed to echo the rolling topography of the Badlands, required precisely engineered connections and joints, supported by steel wrapped in wood to maintain a seamless timber look. Phase two of construction is scheduled to begin on June 1, with Mercer Mass Timber contributing canopies designed to support photovoltaic panels—enhancing the site’s sustainability and expanding mass timber use in outdoor architectural features.

Key Project Highlights:

  • The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is the largest use of mass timber in North Dakota to date. MMT is supplying ~1,800 m³ of CLT and glulam for the 93,000-square-foot structure, including custom glulam connections supporting the museum’s curved roof.
  • The mass timber provides a total carbon benefit of 3031 metric tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the energy to operate 320 homes for a year. The project is pursuing both LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge certification, with goals of net-zero energy, water, waste, and emissions.
  • The final mass timber delivery date is scheduled for June 1, 2025, marking the official start of phase two of construction.

“This project is a testament to what visionary design combined with advanced mass timber engineering can create,” said Ricardo Brites, Director of Engineering & VDC at Mercer Mass Timber. “From custom made glulam connections to a curved roof profile that’s as complex as it is beautiful, this project sets a new bar for civic architecture.”

Incorporating mass timber is a means to honor Theodore Roosevelt’s enduring legacy of conservation with a beautiful nature-forward design. Mass Timber also offers innovative construction advantages, including 25–40% lower carbon emissions, faster installation, and strong fire and earthquake resistance for enhanced safety.

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is set to open on July 4, 2026, and every living president is anticipated to be in attendance.

The acquisition will expand plant operations, manufacturing capabilities, and increase market share for Mercer Mass Timber and parent company, Mercer International

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA – June 15, 2023 – Mercer Mass Timber,  a low-carbon advanced manufacturer of timber building materials and a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., today announces that the acquisition of Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation and its subsidiaries (“Structurlam“) by parent company Mercer International, has been completed. Mercer Mass Timber will immediately take possession and continue the operation of Structurlam’s manufacturing facilities, which will now operate under the ‘Mercer Mass Timber’ brand, including a production facility located in Conway, Arkansas and in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada.

The sale of Structurlam to Mercer International closed on June 15, 2023. The acquisition will materially increase the existing mass timber production capacity at Mercer Mass Timber and cement our position as a leading producer of mass timber products. Mercer Mass Timber now holds all of Structurlam’s brand assets, product and project portfolios, and intellectual property. Both the Conway and Penticton facilities will remain open and operational.

“We are thrilled to welcome Structurlam into the Mercer Mass Timber fold,” said Brian Merwin, Senior Vice President of Mercer Mass Timber. “This acquisition will allow us to offer our customers a wider range of mass timber products, and to better support their projects with the addition of more cross laminated timber (CLT) capacity and glulam production capabilities. Our goal is to become a one-stop shop for all mass timber needs. The additional manufacturing facilities that the Structurlam acquisition brings will enable us to create greater efficiencies.”

The addition of Structurlam will provide Mercer Mass Timber with a number of strategic benefits, including:

      • Increased Product Portfolio, Capacity, and Production Capabilities: This acquisition materially increases Mercer Mass Timber’s capacity for cross laminated timber (CLT). What’s more, it adds glulam production capabilities – 45,000 m3 of capacity to be precise. This will enable Mercer Mass Timber to support larger, more complex projects.

      • Bolsters Technical Mass Timber Expertise, Enhancing Client Services: The acquisition will bring together a wealth of industry leadership and experience. With our collective expertise, Mercer Mass Timber is better equipped to tackle multifaceted  projects, offer innovative solutions, and navigate the dynamic landscape of the industry.

      • Expanded Geographic Reach: Project services will now include both the US and international markets, expanding access to more sustainable building materials which will support global net-zero initiatives in these markets and anywhere else there’s a need for mass timber.

      • Secures Larger Market Share: With an increased market share, Mercer Mass Timber will have greater influence in the standardization of product specifications for mass timber within the North American industry. Currently, materials like steel and concrete are standardized – Mercer Mass Timber’s goal is to create similar influence, to facilitate the larger adoption of mass timber, a more sustainable building material.

    Selected Highlights:

    • Mercer to acquire substantially all of Structurlam’s assets, including its state-of-the-art mass timber facility in Conway, Arkansas, cementing Mercer’s position as a leading mass timber provider in North America.
    • The proposed acquisition will materially increase Mercer’s cross-laminated timber capacity to approx. 210,000 mof CLT and add 45,000 m3 of glulam production capacity.
    • The addition of glulam capability will expand Mercer’s product offering and enhance its ability to service its growing customer base.

NEW YORK, NY – May 30, 2023 Mercer International Inc. (“Mercer” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: MERC) today announced that it has received applicable Bankruptcy Court approval of a sales order approving the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation and its subsidiaries (“Structurlam”), including a production facility located in Conway, Arkansas (the “Conway Facility”) and production facilities in British Columbia, Canada, for $81.1 million, exclusive of a break fee and expense reimbursement, subject to customary adjustments. The transaction is subject to customary conditions and is expected to be completed shortly.

    The Conway Facility

The Conway facility is a modern, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that was built in 2021 and:

    • has an annual capacity of approximately 75,000 m3;
    • can produce both glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT);
    • includes over 280,000 square feet of manufacturing space; and
    • is strategically located in the Southern United States in proximity to growing construction markets and with access to a large and high-quality regional wood basket.

    British Columbia Facilities

The assets also include three facilities located in British Columbia, Canada with a combined annual capacity of approximately 40,000 mof glulam and CLT.

    Glulam

The transaction will, among other things, add glulam production capability to Mercer’s existing mass timber offering. Glulam is a stress-rated, engineered wood product comprised of wood laminations that are bonded together. It is commonly used for support structures such as columns, beams, floor joists, and trusses and offers a high degree of customization and pre-fabrication. With a high strength-to-weight ratio, it offers increased efficiencies in logistics and a smaller carbon footprint relative to common construction materials such as steel and concrete.

Juan Carlos Bueno, President and Chief Executive Officer, stated: “The acquisition of the Structurlam assets is consistent with our strategy to expand and diversify our product mix in our solid wood segment and build out our existing mass timber business. The acquisition will materially increase our existing production capacity and cement our position as a leading producer of mass timber products.

These assets complement our existing Mercer Mass Timber facility, located in Spokane Valley, Washington and provide significant potential synergies on a combined basis. As glulam is commonly incorporated into mass timber construction projects that utilize CLT, the acquisition of Structurlam will enhance our ability to service the growing customer base for our mass timber business.”

He concluded: “Our Mercer Mass Timber facility and the Conway facility are two of the most modern mass timber facilities in North America, which we believe will position us well to capitalize on the growing market share of CLT and glulam in the North American construction business. We look forward to completing the acquisition and continuing to grow our contribution to a circular carbon economy, providing sustainable and carbon reducing alternatives through our innovative forest products.”
