According to Mercer Mass Timber (MMT), phase one construction began one year ago and is centered on the museum building and its dramatic roof structure of sweeping curves and complex geometry. The roof, designed to echo the rolling topography of the Badlands, required precisely engineered connections and joints, supported by steel wrapped in wood to maintain a seamless timber look. 

Phase two of construction is scheduled to begin on June 1, with Mercer Mass Timber contributing canopies designed to support photovoltaic panels—enhancing the site’s sustainability and expanding mass timber use in outdoor architectural features.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based Mercer Mass Timber has completed the first phase of construction on the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota, according to a May 20 news release. The project’s construction costs total $400 million, per a funding breakdown by the library.

Phase one of construction on the 93,000-square-foot structure began last year, and is centered on the museum building and its roof, according to the news release. Kansas City, Missouri-based JE Dunn is the general contractor on the project, according to Mercer Mass Timber’s project page.

It’s meant to honor Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy of nature conservation. 1,800 cubic meters of timber have been used so far. Much of that has been used for the library’s curved roof which was designed to resemble the topography of the badlands.

According to Mercer Mass Timber Senior Vice President Nick Milestone, the complexity of the roof required precise engineering.

“In order to do such complex geometry it has to go back to, not just hand-engineering, but it has to go through a digital twin,” Milestone said. “So therefore we have to make sure that both the glue-on components and the steel components – which came from another company – that it all met correctly in the modeling. If it fits in the model, it fits the job site perfectly well.

Mercer Mass Timber, a leading manufacturer of sustainable timber building materials and a subsidiary of Mercer International, played a key role in the installation of mass timber panels that began in 2024 is now complete. 

Mercer Conway supplied a total of 21,000 cubic meters of cross-laminated timber and glue-laminated timber for the project while providing jobs for nearly 60 local employees. MMT is also set to provide CLT and Glulam for two major sections of campus that will open in late 2025 to early 2026. 

Zone 1 will include four hybrid mass timber buildings, four stories each, boasting a total of nearly 900,000 square feet of office space and parking decks. Zone 3 will include additional offices built with full mass timber frames, including a single five-story building with a total area of more than 330,000 square feet. 

“This project showcases how mass timber can transform commercial construction,” said Nick Milestone, senior vice president at MMT. “We’re proud to support Walmart’s sustainability vision and demonstrate how local, eco-friendly materials create beautiful, high-performance workplaces.”

That includes a single five-story building with a total area of 332,615 square feet, per the release.

Last week, Mercer Mass Timber announced the completion of mass timber production for the office buildings. The company said in a news release that once completed, the campus will be the largest to use mass timber in the United States.

The installation of the mass timber panels began in Spring 2024 and is now fully complete. 

Shawmut Design and Construction and Layton Construction selected MMT to provide cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (Glulam) for two major sections of the campus, opening in late 2025 to early 2026.
