Perched atop Alabama’s highest peak, the new Cheaha State Park Lodge marks a defining moment for sustainable design and regional craftsmanship

Spokane Valley, WA – November 18, 2025Mercer Mass Timber (MMT), a leading manufacturer of sustainable timber building materials and a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., announces its role in the design and fabrication of Alabama’s largest mass timber project—the new Cheaha State Park Lodge in Delta, Alabama. The 26,000-square-foot lodge exemplifies how material innovation can honor place, heritage, and ecology through modern mass timber construction.

The new Cheaha State Park Lodge design reinterprets legacy through a contemporary lens, employing a hybrid structural system of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam, all manufactured by Mercer Mass Timber in Conway, AR using FSC-certified, locally sourced Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) from within Alabama. Known for its high density and stiffness, SYP is well-suited to the elevation and climate demands of the Appalachian foothills.

Designed by Chambless King Architects for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the lodge draws inspiration from the park’s original 1930s-era stone structures, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the New Deal. Throughout, the architecture invites visitors to reconnect with nature through the tactility and warmth of exposed wood, and a biophilic design approach that intersects forest and structure.

“Designing the new lodge at Cheaha has truly been the project of a lifetime,” said Jared Fulton, AIA, principal at Chambless King Architects. “We sought to design the space as an extension of the mountain, cascading the building form to follow the site grades and connect visitors back to nature. The material choices—specifically the inclusion of mass timber—celebrate renewable building materials in their raw, natural state and complement the distinctive features of Cheaha’s New Deal Era Civilian Conservation Corps structures. Beyond enriching the guest experience, we hope the new lodge becomes a meaningful asset to the local community and a lasting tribute to the mountain’s legacy.”

The name Cheaha derives from the Creek word Chaha, meaning “high place,” a fitting appreciation of a site long revered by Indigenous peoples for its elevation and spiritual significance. Mercer Mass Timber and its project partners acknowledge and honor this history, recognizing the enduring connection between the mountain and those who first named it.

“We are proud to support Alabama’s embrace of renewable materials that tell the story of place through design, performance, and respect for the land,” said Ricardo Brites, Director of Engineering & VDC at Mercer Mass Timber. “This four-story project, featuring an extensive amount of exposed mass timber components, is made possible through our strong partnerships. We are thankful to The Westervelt Company, our fiber sourcing partner, and Carpentry Plus, Inc., the mass timber integrator, for their partnership in bringing this signature project to life.”

Set for completion in early 2026, Cheaha State Park Lodge stands as a public commitment to low-carbon construction, regional identity, and the timeless dialogue between nature and craft.

Regional innovation, sustainable construction, and first Chain-of-Custody benchmark highlight mass timber’s future in America

Spokane Valley, WA – September 30, 2025Mercer Mass Timber (MMT), a leading manufacturer of sustainable timber building materials and a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., proudly announces its role in the completion of the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design & Materials Innovation at the University of Arkansas, a first-of-its-kind academic hub dedicated to timber design, research, and fabrication using mass timber and other materials.

The 45,000-square-foot, four-story facility showcases how locally sourced, sustainably certified timber can transform both the built environment and the educational landscape.

At the core of the project is 1,079  m3 of Southern Yellow Pine cross-laminated timber (CLT), manufactured at Mercer’s Conway, Arkansas, facility—just hours from the Fayetteville site. By sourcing regionally, the project supports Arkansas’s working forests, economy, and 52 local jobs.

“Our contribution to the Anthony Timberlands Center reflects the potential of regionally sourced mass timber. With CLT manufactured at our Conway factory, just a few hours from the site, we’re proud to support a project that aligns closely with our values: sustainability, regional impact, and purpose-built design. This project stands as a showcase of forward-thinking architecture—and a powerful case for what’s possible when material and intent are in sync,” said Nick Milestone, Chief Operating Officer, Mercer Mass Timber.

The Anthony Timberlands Center marks Mercer Mass Timber’s first chain-of-custody-certified project, with 30% of timber SFI-certified under CoC protocols and the remainder sustainably sourced. This milestone underscores MMT’s commitment to transparency, traceability, and responsible forestry practices—ensuring that sustainability claims are verifiable from forest to final installation. The project is also targeting LEED Gold certification and integrates biophilic design, daylighting strategies, and ecological landscaping that connects the campus to the Ozark landscape.

“Through early design-assist, our team collaborated closely with the architects and engineers to tailor the CLT system for constructability, performance, and fabrication efficiency,” said Ricardo Brites, Director of Engineering & VDC, Mercer Mass Timber.

“The ATC is a breakthrough in how regional timber and advanced fabrication can deliver both innovation and measurable sustainability. It reflects our commitment to advancing mass timber design in North America.”

We are standing at the threshold of construction’s third industrial revolution. First concrete. Then steel. And now, mass timber.

by Nick Milestone, COO, Mercer Mass Timber

This moment is the most exciting of my career. The convergence of performance, prefabrication and sustainability has created an undeniable momentum. The tipping point for mass timber in North America’s built environment has arrived.

I entered the construction industry as a teenager growing up in Northern England, when thanks to my grandfather, a site carpenter, I landed my first job. From there I moved into the steel industry in the early 1990s, earned three relevant degrees, and all the while, paid careful attention to what was happening across Europe.

In the early 2000s, Central Europe saw the birth of cross-laminated timber (CLT) — a response to declining rural economies and abundant forest resources. Engineers, researchers, and manufacturers came together to form a new material system that was strong, light, renewable, and efficient.

Within a decade, it had taken hold across the continent and crossed the Channel to the UK. I followed its trajectory closely and eventually transitioned into the relatively new, inspiring space. Mass timber has sent me to build projects the world over.

Walmart Home Office Campus, Bentonville, AR

I waited 30 years to deliver a significant project in the U.S. though, and when the opportunity arose, it was certainly worth the wait—the new Walmart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, the largest mass timber corporate campus in the country.

From order to site, the project took just 40 weeks to complete. Forty weeks! That’s from 3D modeling to fabrication, assembly, delivery, and installation. That kind of delivery speed is not just impressive, it’s transformative.

Walmart’s HQ represents a beautiful convergence of conventional and innovative materials, proving that steel and mass timber are not in competition, but in concert.

Here’s what excites me:

  • Mass timber brings speed to market: Prefabrication reduces construction schedules by up to 25%, which means a faster ROI.
  • Mass timber balances the volatility of steel: While steel prices can fluctuate, mass timber has shown resilience and price stability.
  • Mass timber creates true carbon neutrality: In hybrid structures, mass timber offsets the carbon load of steel, creating balanced systems.
  • Mass timber is a protector: It burns on the surface, forming a protective layer of char that slows fire spread and shields deeper
  • structural components from damage.

Today, over 30 million square feet of mass timber construction exists in the U.S. By 2030, that figure is expected to reach 80 million. Mass timber now exists in all building typologies, from commercial offices and schools to healthcare facilities and housing.

We are not waiting for a future where mass timber is mainstream. We are living it today.

Winston Churchill once said, “To understand the direction of your future, you need to understand your past.”

The past taught us how to mine for minerals and build with concrete and steel. And today, as we innovate and even regenerate, we continue to expand the possibilities in the realm of construction. Hybrid projects are faster, smarter, and more sustainable than ever before, and the symbiotic nature of steel and mass timber represents the future of construction in North America.

Mass timber’s moment has arrived indeed.

by Eric Bolin, KVRR Fox

It’s meant to honor Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy of nature conservation. 1,800 cubic meters of timber have been used so far. Much of that has been used for the library’s curved roof which was designed to resemble the topography of the badlands.

According to Mercer Mass Timber Senior Vice President Nick Milestone, the complexity of the roof required precise engineering.

“In order to do such complex geometry it has to go back to, not just hand-engineering, but it has to go through a digital twin,” Milestone said. “So therefore we have to make sure that both the glue-on components and the steel components – which came from another company – that it all met correctly in the modeling. If it fits in the model, it fits the job site perfectly well.
